The theme of loss of faith is prevalent amidst many writings The novel The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood and the poem Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold both surround the central theme of loss of faith Faith is complete trust or confidence in someone or something whereas loss of trust or confidence results in a human tragedy Everyone loses faith in humanity to save themselves by questioning humanity or the existence of god The two writings portray this human tragedy by creating a sense of distrust throughout the plot Loss of faith was witnessed in The Robber Bride when Tony a military historian realizes her parents divorced because she was not a desirable daughter thus Tony has lost faith in long lasting relationships Tonys parents Anthea and Griff met in England during World War II and got married due to the birth of Tony This proved to be a weak relationship as one night Anthea eloped from home and is killed in a boat accident Griff was abandoned being forced to look after of their daughter but was unable to therefore shooting himself when Tony graduated from high school Due to this Tony doesnt think about her parents very much Narrator 90 By the time Tony graduates from university with her boyfriend West they breakup because of Zenia one of Tonys friends captures the affections of West Zenia eventually runs away with Tonys money she is simply not there anymore Tony 100 Tony was shocked by the actions taken by Zenia and lost all faith in herCharis from The Robber Bride also experiences loss of faith by her relatives explain how Chariss father had died when she was young and her mother was very unstable Therefore Chairss uncle and aunt had adopted her but her aunt was not very happy with this responsibility and treated Charis very remotely Chariss uncle appeared to be pleased by the presence of Charis until his true intentions soon emerged
