Within the various works of The Hurricane The Story of Acteaon and Thief a common theme emerges of physical death In The Hurricane Ruben Carter is sentenced to three life sentences where he is denied his rights to physical life and survives by withdrawing himself from the physical world existing only as a piece of meat in a jail cell Actaeon in The Story of Actaeon is sentenced death by the reversal of his role in nature where he goes from the hunter to the hunted for an innocent mistake The denying of the right to life or physical death emerges as a universal theme within the three works of The Hurricane The Story of Actaeon and Thief where each story has its own unique tie to this common theme The Hurricane is a true story about Rubin Carter a middleweight boxer with dreams of winning the championship title is sentenced to three life terms for the murders of three New Jersey residents Having spent most of his life in and out of jail Rubin Carter was effectively denied his right to a normal life In prison Rubin was put into an environment where as a high risk prisoner he was most likely confined to a cell for the majority of the day effectively removing him from outside life leaving him as a body that was confined to a cell unable to make a difference in society or make autonomous choices such as having most of his meal choices made for him In the eyes of the system Rubin Carter was little more than one of the thousands of people contained within the walls of the prison where there was little value to life as Rubin Carter was meant to die there Sitting there physically powerless Rubin Carter was physically dead in the eyes of society as the justice system had condemned him to spend his life in prison a fate similar
