Resentment is an indignation for ill will felt as a result of a real or imagined grievance This is often the cause for revenge The Salem Witch Trials which took place in Salem Massachusetts 1962 caused many of the villagers to start defending their honor Abigail Williams Ann Putnam and Thomas Putnam are only a few of the numerous characters within The Crucible whom seek vengeance Arthur Miller is showing in The crucible that a Puritan society can cause one to seek revenge in order to be superiorAbigail Williams the niece of Reverend Parris portrays Puritanism and how the demand to feel superior will lead one to discovering revenge Early within the novel it is discovered that Abigail Williams and John Proctor have an affair At the time Abigail was working for John and his wife Elizabeth But as soon as Elizabeth identified what was evolving Abigail was forced out Unaware of what to do for she still loves John Abigail begins to dig for revenge Because she is so jealous of Elizabeth she begins to accuse John Proctors wife of witchcraft After hearing what Abigail has been up to Elizabeth can only conclude that She is blackening my name in the village She is telling lies about me She is a cold sniveling woman and you bend to her 24 However while Elizabeth is expressing herself to her husband another issue is stemming What Elizabeth does not know quite yet was that Abigail accused her of witchcraft by telling the people of Salem that Elizabeth sent her spirit to stab Abigail in the stomach with a needle The villagers begin to fall for Abigails falseness when Abigail describes that she knows of a poppet that Elizabeth has Ironically the poppet was pierced in the same spot on the doll as Abigail Therefore Abigail wants Elizabeth to be dead only so she can greedily keep John to herself and as a result abandons Abigail Abigail
