To fulfill the desire of monopolization politicians seek power throughout their lifetime and struggle for power and domination To be able to sustain the power the Party uses dictatorship to control the citizens and try to seek limitless power In the novel 1984 George Orwell masterfully demonstrates that a totalitarian society can maintain its power structure using the manipulation of thoughts and speech physical pain and rewriting the past One way to preserve power structure is to use the manipulation of thoughts and speech such as doublespeak and doublethink and newspeak Doublespeak deliberately distorts or reverses the actual meaning of a word to make it sound more pleasant and the Party always uses it to blur the truth and convince their citizens When Winston looks out from the window he picks out the three slogans of the Party War is Peace Freedom is Slavery Ignorance is Strength Orwell 7 These words clearly show the power of doublespeak and the aim of the Party War makes people become nationalistic and collective against the enemy Also the Party is trying to make people feel that they are fighting for the benefits and the safety of their citizens which sounds more palatable than the actual meaning of war Therefore war is peace is a doublespeak phrase used by the Party to keep the power over their people Freedom is slavery is another example of doublespeak The party tries to make people think that they have the freedom of not having to worry about anything because the Party has planned out the best for them All they have to do is to follow the orders whereas people do not realize that the Party tries to limit their thoughts and control their physical action Ignorance is strength shows that the Party does not want anybody to think Ignorant people do not often want to understand whats happening around them Hence it is easier for the Party to have control over
