Glaucons challenge to Socrates consisted of three main points The first point was about the common conception of justice and its origins The second point states that justice was only an instrumental good Finally the last point also the main thesis of Glaucons challenge stated that the unjust life is better than the just oneGlaucon designed his argument as a three-step system making it very difficult for Socrates to disprove the entire argument Glaucon set his argument the way he did because it acted like a trap of sorts if you agreed with one point you would have to agree with the rest of the argument Glaucon begins his argument with what he calls his origins of justice Glaucons general assumption of justices origin is that since injustice is so much worse to suffer than the goodness of justice that people without the power to avoid suffering it made laws and covenants agreeing not to do injustice to one another To them justice was now seen as a medium between two extremes the best being non-penalized injustice and the worst being injustice being done to someone without being able to take revenge Glaucon then continues with this by stating that those who were being just were only being that way because they were required to and if they were given the opportunity they would be unjust like everyone else Glaucon calls this a prime example of human nature doing injustice in order to be superior This example begins to prove his next point justice is purely an instrumental good 358-359There are three types of goods that are used within Platos Republic discusses First there is the intrinsic good which is a good in and of itself The second type of good is the instrumental good which is a good that we get out of something The third is a mixed good which is a mixture of both intrinsic and instrumental good Glaucon really focuses his
