Three times between 1689 and 1748 France and Great Britain had fought for power in Europe and North America Each war ended with an uneasy peace In 1754 fighting broke out again The long conflict that followed was called the French and Indian War MAJOR WASHINGTON Scuffles between France and Britian in the Ohio River valley triggered the opening shots of the French played an important part as fighting began After Georgr washinton returned Dinwiddie promoted him He also sent the young man west again This time Dinwiddle ordeded Washinton to take about 100 to 200 men and build a fort where the mononghela and Allegheny rivers meet The fort was to protect Virginas land claims in the upper Ohio River valley PROCLAMATION OF 1763 Pontiacs war convinced the British to close western lands to settlers To do this the govenernment issued the proclamation of 1763 The proclamation drew an imaginary line along the crest of the Appalachian Mountains Colonists were forbidden to settle west of the line The proclamation ordered all settlers already west of the line to remove themselves at once To enforce the law Britian sent 10000 troops to the colonies Fewe troops went to the frontier however Most stayed in cities along Atlantic cost
