When I was young I would watch cartoons of glorious individuals thatsaved the world They had tragic pasts yet they persevered and used theirtalents to help others I would always dream about what it would be like tobe one of those heroes to have super powers and use them for the betterAs I grew older I discovered a love for history which made me realize howmany heroes have already lived and died No they were not flying aroundthe city with a cape billowing behind them No they were not swinging frombuilding to building by a small string of web Yet they were still savinglives making this cruel world a better place Heroes come in many formssome excel in bravery some selflessness and some in confidence Yet eachone comes to the rescue each and every time When the word hero is spoken one of the most common traits thatcome to mind is bravery A man who definitely displayed this trait wasLeonidas I King of Sparta Being born in 540 BC as a regular citizenLeonidas was the only Spartan king to be subjected to the harsh training ofSpartan youth At the tender age of seven he was taken from his home andendured eleven years of rigorous training He returned knowing that he wasthe rightful heir to the throne after his predecessor King AnaxandridasLeonidas was given the position over his brother because of his strengthand determination to lead the Spartans to victory against the Persians Theclimax of his leadership was the battle of Thermopylae when King Leonidasled 300 of his best men to fight King Xerses and his army of 14000 menThis task took true bravery and strength They killed over half of thePersian army before facing an inevitable defeat Even though King Leonidaslost that day he still won respect and went down in history as one of themost powerful rulers of all time
