Zac Harlan 3-1-01 Computer Networking Paper Bandwidth Abuse Bandwidth is something that crosses most everyones mind while they sit in front of their computers waiting for a web page to load They may be thinking Why is this taking so long It wasnt this slow a couple of hours ago Is there something I can do to speed this up Bandwidth is a measure of the diffference between the highest and lowest frquencies that a media can trnsmit More generally how much information can be transmitted through the line that goes to your computer The answers to the above questions arent simple to solve but they are relatively simple to answer The reason some network connection namely home dialup connections are so slow is because there isnt much bandwidth available to use Put simply this problem can be solved in one of two ways get more bandwidth or be more productive with the bandwidth you have Most people opt out of buying more bandwidth because that usually involves running in an Ethernet line or a cable line to their com puter In addition to that they must pay the additional expense of buying the service of being able to use the line Just using a cable or Ethernet connection usually costs around 40 - 50 a month not to mention that most areas dont even offer this service The other solution to this primordial problem is to be more efficient with bandwidth you have The most basic way anyone optimizes the performance of anything is to get rid of what is not needed In the case of bandwidth you would want to have as much free bandwidth as possible to ensure a fast connection The major opposition to this is the people who hog bandwidth on either your connection or on the connection of the web page you are looking at These hogs are people that abuse the privilege of having the Internet by
