However, there was a lack of detail and specification of characters in the beginning that made this essay confusing to read, particularly because I have never read Hemingway's story before. Once I looked up the short story, everything became a lot more clear. You don't want readers to have to do that, though, in order for them to have a basic understanding of your writing, so it would be helpful to note in the very beginning that the American is the man and Jig is the girl. Your analysis overall is fairly good, but could go even deeper. You touch a little bit on the fact that the while elephant is the thing in the story that the couple doesn't want. In real life, a white elephant gift is generally something people do not want or have no use for. Incorporating that idea specifically would really help show that you understand why the term "white elephant" is used, strengthening your analysis of the short story and the use of irony in it. This paper could really benefit from a round of proofreading as well to help you clean up some grammar and punctuation issues and further enhance your ideas."
