First Practice At first glance Gary Gildners pome First Practice seems very short simple and straight to the point With the pomes boot camp like feel it leads you to believe it is all about preparing fearless young men for war There are certain points in the pome where the author uses militaristic traits and wording which again leads you to believe the pome in some way must be related to the military Although the tone of this pome sounds like a Drill Sargent it is really about a youths first football practice The pome starts with the line After the doctor checked to see we werent ruptured which seems normal for a pome titled First Practice This is the young kid telling you about how he had to get a physical from a doctor in order to play In the second line the pome throughs a twist at you the man with the short cigar took us under the grade school Just that one word CIGAR completely burns the word Drill Sargent into your mind Now with an army like feel in your head the next line backs it up more with where we went in case of attack or storm It seems as though the Drill Sargent is leading his new troops to there barracks or underground battle station for training Next the pome reads and said he was Clifford Hill he was a man who believed dogs ate dogs he had once killed for his country This now puts a better picture of what this coach is all about in your mind The name Clifford Hill has the both the words Cliff and Hill Just saying that name gets you tired This guy seems like one tough fellow and to top it off he believes in the modo kill or be killed The author again uses a military theme telling you that he had once killed for his
