In Cold Mountain Frazier does not write about one of the brightest moments in Americas history In fact he does just the opposite Cold Mountain takes place during the Civil War which is arguably Americas darkest hour With death carnage and conflict all around it seems nearly impossible for any good to come out of this situation Destruction rarely breeds success Contrary to what would seem natural to flow from the string of events taking place Frazier gives examples of very strong individuals who choose not to become a product of their environment and work hard to overcome their less than ideal circumstances in order to make their lives successful rewarding and fulfilling When Inman went to fight for the Confederate Army he knew it would be a trying experience to say the least He expected to see death pain significant loss and to come out a changed man but he probably did not expect that he himself would end up on what could have been his death bed with a nearly fatal and slow healing neck wound Then when Inman decided he would make the long trek home to Cold Mountain instead of returning to the battlefield his life did not get any easier He had to battle daily against injury fatigue hunger weather and ruthless human foes It would not have seemed strange to those around him if Inman had become hostile closed off or just lost his will to live altogether However Inman did none of those things Even though he had seen thousands of men lay dead and dying on the sloping fieldlying all about in bloody heaps 1213 which caused Inman terrible recurring nightmares he chose to continually push forward against his challenging circumstances until he finally reached his ultimate goal getting back to the love of his life Ada Up until the death of her father Monroe Ada had an easy relaxed life As one of Charlestons social elite
