The first maketh men invade for gain the second for safety and the third for reputation The first use violence to make themselves masters of other mens persons wives children and cattle the second to defend them the third for trifles as a word a smile a different opinion and any other sign of undervalue either direct in their persons or by reflection in their kindred their friends their nation their profession or their nameThomas Hobbes provides examples of how quarrel in the human being plays out Argument and Violence can play out in different ways as illustrated above In this essay I will discuss why Hobbes listed these above principles as his 3 principles of quarrel and how these 3 principles can be a cause for war Hobbes also stated I put for a generall inclination of all mankind a perpetual and restless desire for Power after power that ceaseth only in Death p79 The struggle of power and the human being wanting to be the most powerful is what causes the first quarrel which is gain Hobbes successfully illustrates the humans natural tendency and desire for power safety and honorThe passage above talks about the causes of argument and violence in a human being Hobbes mentions the war and the causes of it throughout the entire book If any two men desire the same thing which nevertheless they cannot both enjoy they become enemies and in the way to their End which is principally their own conservation and sometimes their delectation only endeavor to destroy or subdue one an other p80 Hobbes is saying that war is inevitable and will happen one way or the other The above passage describes the ways people get into a fight 2which may eventually lead to war The first maketh men invade for gain- This part of the passage talks about the desire every human has to be in complete power Man wants to own more power
