The two poems Midway and Alabama Centennial share not only an author but also many salient features Both poems written by Naomi Long Madgett discuss topics such as standing up for morals facing adversity and the uprising of rebellion However there are also some differences between the two including differences in the tone and emotions portrayed Each poem has certain distinct features that allow you to discern between the twoAlabama Centennial depicts the period in which African Americans waited for freedom The tone of this poem is more anxious than that of Midway It portrays the transition in the life of blacks and the hardships they endured This transition is being represented when the speaker says Then a new wind blew and a new voice rode its wings with quiet urgency Alabama Centennial 10-11 Years later voices started to echo the freedom words The words were whispered sand prayed and shouted They started to gain effect in the minds of the more dominant race of the time However the time span of the poem did not reach the common dayMidway starts out strong Right from the start you will notice the rhyme scheme which helps to keep the poem going The diction used was also slightly more challenging than that of Alabama Centennial Determination is evident in the tone of the poem as portrayed by the quote Ive come this far to freedom and I wont turn back Midway 1 It seems as if the African Americans portrayed in the poem have labored for the majority of their lives and now that the movement towards freedom has begun they know what they want and will not settle for any lessBoth poems express courage in standing up for their morals The hardships that African Americans endured along with the uprising of rebellion are evident Each poem is written from an African Americans point of view but it cannot be determined whether it is a man
