Democracys roots can be traced as far back in history as the fifth century BC in the Grecian City State of Athens The people of Athens had developed many aspects of government taht would later be implemented in the formation of American government Infact the latin root for the word democracy demos kratia originated durnig the fifth century The society in Athens was possibly the first to set up a governing assembly that allowed any male to over the age of 18 to serve This did exclude both women and slaves a trait that the United States would later share The assembly had the powe to tax delegate where those taxes were to be spent as well as covering all forms of foreign relations This is quite similar to the functuons of the Senate and House of representatives in United States government In fact also like the United States the assembly system in Athens contained two houses the Assembly and the Boule The Boule was in sesion only when the Assembly was not Also me serving on the Boule were limited to only two one year terms much like the limitations set on Congress today It is quite obvious taht the founding fathers looked to Athens when creating our own government Athens devotion to the public good as well as the sharing of political authority and the the choosing of representatives must have seemed very appwaling after the tyrannical rule of Great Britain
