The first few years of my life were spent in Islamabad the capital of Pakistan one of the most cosmopolitan and urbanizedcities of the country My father was in the army and one day he got a posting letter from the Pakistan Army to report to the military hospital in QuettaQuetta is provincial capital of Baluchistan the least developed province of the country hence the news of the posting was quite calamitous On my first day to school I found myself amidst a group of extremely fair complexioned rug rats speaking an exotic language Initially I was very nervous while interacting with the Pathans However as I gradually opened myself to the culture of the west I began to feel much more comfortable Life there was simpler the people were more down to earth and the community was much more sportive I spent three intoxicating years becoming a part of the distinct culture and embracing its unique festivities However to my dismay my father got another posting letter with orders to report to the Military Hospital of Sharurah in Saudi Arabia And so began another intriguing chapter of my lifeA new race a new geography and an alien language - I was petrified With its arid climate and endless beds of sand the flight to Arabia felt like travelling to Mars Sharurah was located near the southern border of Arabia home to the wildest tribes of the middle-east the Bedouins Every evening the Bedouin children would play football bare-footed on the scorching desert sand Initially it seemed outrageous however it was in-fact more easy playing without my shoes The Arabs followed a strict dress code in their routine lives with gigantic black robes for the females covering their entire bodies and white robes for the males They had a tradition of marrying four wives at a time So it seemed quite bizarre picturing a platoon led by a large white figure followed by four black
