Truth and consequence Its a choice and experience we all must inevitably encounter But no matter the consequences we all have to pursue the truth only then can we begin to understand ourselves The value of truth is measured by circumstance but under what circumstances must we pursue truth JAG lawyer Daniel Kaffee gambles that his two clients Marine Privates Harold Dawson and Lowden Downey are ordered to present fellow marine Private William Santiago with a code red We all know however that gambling can produce consequences In Kaffees situation the consequence is dire He is faced with the dilemma of not questioning Colonel Nathan Jessep and sealing the fates of his clients or questioning Jessep and possibly sealing either his own fate or Colonel Jesseps As Jack Ross informs Kaffee I have an obligation to tell you that if you accuse Kendrick or Jessep of any crime without proper evidence you will be subject to Court-Martial for professional misconduct Yet Kaffee pursues the truth no matter the consequence The ethical and moral standards that we value also contribute to our understandings of truth As good people we are morally obligated to reveal the truth but if that decision is not ethically sound how can we live with that obligation Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Markinson is struggling within this very tight spot I want you to know Im proud neither of what Ive done nor what Im doing Markinson is in a cross between his duty as a moral person and his duty as a marine Even though we are obligated to shine the light on truth does that mean we have to throw are ethical standards in the dark The decision was too severe for Markinson to make the choice overpowered him For my part Ive done as much as I can to bring the truth to light And the truth is this your son is dead for only one reason I wasnt strong
