It is a rare opportunity that a student is given a platform to design his or her ideal class Most college classes are impersonal affairs where an instructor expounds on a topic and only engages with the students in brief pulses to ask questions about specific subjects of interest in the lecture Usually the students are either feverishly taking notes attentively listening lost in a daydream or worse sound asleep The typical class experience is unfortunately staid and formulaic The experience is akin to coming across a brick wall in your path a stiflingly dense obstacle to be overcome My ideal class would be a departure from the model that most students have become familiar with My ideal class would be student-centered as opposed to academia centeredby that I mean the class would be more about realizing a students intellectual enrichment than having a professor lecture on about a topic If the typical class is like a solid wall my ideal class would be essentially similar to plaster one that is malleable intricately structured yet enhanced by an inherent creative spontaneity It would be malleable because there is no pedestaleveryone in the class is an intellectual equal critiques are made by both my colleagues and my professor The intricacy in the courses structure would come from the nuances in the converging ideas of the class The inherent creative spontaneity is a result of the personal human element of the class I would love nothing more than to learn in an environment that could be best described as a veritable marketplace of ideas I imagine an insular class representing a vast multiplicity of ages nationalities and ideas The kind of class where dialogue is encouraged and dissenting points of view are openly welcomed In terms of the make-up of the class I imagine an insular class representing a vast multiplicity of ages nationalities and ideas exchanging thoughts and words with both my colleagues and the professor
