After reading Immigrant Kids by Russell Freedman I learned about what immigrants faced when traveling to America The chapter told me about the trip to get to America And also what the immigrants had to do when they arrived at Ellis Island The author also tells me what they came for how many came and why they came It also explains what most of the immigrants did after going through Ellis Island And the author also explains where they came from It tells us how they were treated on Ellis Island The boat ride to America wasnt what they expected The people who had the least money had to ride in the steerage The steerage was the lowest point in the ship The beds were stacked three high It was very hot and smelly because of no air coming in It was under the water when traveling it was very hard to move Most of the passengers tried to spend as much time on the deck of the ship Most of the people did not have anything to eat And the ones who did ate their meals from pailsbuckets It was a very hard trip for the people in the steerageWhen the immigrants arrived they had to take different kinds of test The first test you would be checked for sickness by a doctor You were marked with different letters in chalk and then detained in the building The next test you had to take was of education If you could not read or write you were sent back to where you came from Lastly you were asked a series of questions about you For examples you were asked Where did you come from and How much money did you have also Do you have family in America And if you passed the test you were free If you even had a little mistake in any of the test you sent back to your
