Bettelheim and Tater each have different views about what Cinderella actually means Although they each have different views of the tale both authors go into detail about their own opinions Bruno Bettelheim an educator a writer and a child psychologist believes that the overall theme of Cinderella is sibling rivalry and also believes that the tale can give children tools that can help them resolve their own conflicts Maria Tatar a folklorist at Harvard University believes that fairy tales have many real-life challenges and nothing is ever false or unreal Bettelheim deals more with sibling rivalry and with the subconscious effect Cinderella has on young children while Tatar deals with the positive effects of parents telling their children fairy tales The idea that mainly appears in peoples minds when they think of Cinderella is that one girl end up to live happily ever after despite all the hardships she had to go through to get to that point However when it comes to Bettelheim and Tatar this is not the idea Both authors discuss the importance of Cinderella although each one has a different view For example Bettelheim focuses particularly on sibling rivalry while Tatar focuses on the psychology behind the tale Also Bettelheims essay is based on the concept of just sibling rivalry when Tatars essay is concerning both parents and children One of Tatars concerns about fairy tales is that children may not fully grasp the concept of the messages they are trying to convey Bettelheim on the other hand states periodically throughout his essay that children will see the success in fairy tales and expect the same to happen to them later in their lives Despite the two authors differences both of them can relate to one another Although it may be discussed in a different way both Bettelheim and Tatar say that fairy tales have a moral or a lesson behind them The authors also discuss how fairytales develop Another similarity
