Personification Personification is when you give an object animal or concepts human abilities making them able to cry talk think feel etc Personification is closely related to metaphors Personifications are used to give an objective description which is given trough an object An example could be Sylvia Plaths poem mirror I am silver and exact I have no preconceptions Whatever I see I swallow immediately Just as is unmisted by love or dislike I am not cruel only truthful The eye of a little god four-cornered Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall It is pink with speckles I have looked at it so long I think it is a part of my heart But it flickers Faces and darkness separates us over and over Now I am a lake A woman bends over me Searching my reaches for what she really is Then she turns to those liars the candle or the moon I see her back and reflect it faithfully She rewards me with tears and agitation of hands I am important to her She comes and goes Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness In me she has drowned a young girl and in me an old woman Rises toward her day after day like a terrible fish As you can see the whole poem is one big personification because it is the thoughts and feelings of a mirror In this poem a lake has been personified and describes in the first stanza how a personified lake would feel about itself It is calm have no preconceptions Almost everything that falls into it goes to the bottom The lake reflects the sky personified as a human being seeing the opposite wall of a room The lake is given feelings a heart and ability of thinking It can see and feel the thoughts of the woman who
