Body Language Body language is the way that we hold and move our bodies in when we are giving or receiving information There are two broad types of body language open body language and closed body language Some body language theorists say that these are very old behaviours which date back to our early ancestors By maintaining open body language our ancestors showed that they had no concealed weapons hidden behind their back their armpits or in their hands By opening our hands unfolding our arms and bodies we still show that we mean the other person no harm When we have closed body language we appear to be physically showing that we are hiding something from the other person and this can be threatening to them These messages are often received subconsciously by the other person who starts to distrust our words and what we mean by them An open manner is a good start to an open frank conversation Tone of Voice How we say something is as important as what we say It is possible to completely change meaning by changing our tone of voice For example it is possible to change the meaning of the two simple words sit down just by changing our tone of voice Sit Down said in a strong loud voice in a classroom to students can have a very different meaning from Sit down said in a soft quiet voice in a candle lit restaurant to arriving guests Vocal Sounds These are short words and noises that we make to show that we are listening to what the other person is saying They can be neutral sounds which say Go on I am listening such as Mm -Mm They can be positive to show approval such as Yep yeah exactly absolutely They can be negative to show disapproval such as No-way No or incredulous to show surprise such as Really Incredible or Oh The
