THE RIGHT TO HUNT FOR FOOD Get your deer yet is the fall topic of cafe conversation all across Northern Michigan - not particularly highbrow stuff by the standards of urban cafe society certainly but there it is Get your deer yet Not yet but Im workin on one How bout you Got me a little spike yesterday morning Aint gonna make the record books but its meat in the freezer for the winter You betcha Let me state right off and say that all people are not hunters of course but one thing they have in common is that they generally have hunters in their families - brothers uncles cousins and in-laws Hunting the gathering of game for the table has always been an accepted part of their lives as essential as it was to the Native Americans whom they have displaced as natural a part of the basic fabric in their life All people do not agree with the belief that hunting is good for the future of America but it has been here for as long as history can tell Hunting is something that some people have to do to survive It is true that not all hunters are responsible ones That is why certain laws have been made to help protect the animals rights Yet this is not enough for the people that constantly protest against rights to hunt Human beings have been hunting for a very long time at least a half-million years and to this vast majority of middle Americans the pursuit requires no moral explanation no debate and no validation No need to investigate the matter to put our own mind at ease We all should come to terms with something that might seem barbarous to those of us who are used to acquiring our meat shrink-wrapped in Styrofoam By the same token there is no such thing as
