Education can be the great equalizer in our society but the problem is our education system hasnt allowed for equal attainment of education in poverty stricken places Personally growing up in a low income community in which eighty percent of my school was on reduced or free lunch plans allowed me to see the impact of education in poverty stricken areas I witnessed firsthand in my Mothers Elementary class how a teacher who makes the extra effort to reach out to parents and get them involved in their childs education can really make a difference in a childs life This has inspired me to join Teach for America so that I can help get parents involved in their childrens education and futures while also fighting to help close the educational gap As a corps member I would strive to help spread awareness about the positives of pursuing a higher education while working with my students and their families on an individual basis to give them the help they need to become successful As a child I had the support of my family and teachers from a young age to work hard and go to college eventually the question for my future became which college would I be attending instead of would I attend college and without the support of my family and teachers this wouldnt of been possible The biggest problem in low-income regions is getting people to believe that college is an option and is an attainable goal children just need a strong support system at a young age I would hope that as a corps member I could help be a part of that support structure for my students and help develop long-term lasting support by the community for their children to succeed in academic endeavors If I become a corps member I would try my hardest to help the children in my classroom reach the goals that they have set for themselves
