For the first time since 2003 teachers at catholic high schools of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia went on strike Now over 16000 students remain not in school The teachers agree that they do not have reasonable rights in their contracts Without their fair right on the contract the teachers remain on strike for the right reasons The teachers should stay on strike because of their own benefits being reduced not getting reasonable pay and a systematic process to evaluate teachers that is rational and equal The Catholic school teachers remain on strike because they do not have a signed contract For example the union will not allow teachers to cross the picket line and go back to work Teachers need to worry about reduced benefits such as vacation days sick days personal days and leave of absence Todays teaching requires more yet there entire pay package does not reflect what they should receive In addition teachers search for more job security With the amount of schools that closed teachers remain concerned about the prospects of rehiring if there school should happen to close for economic reasons This contract proposed a chance for them to look to the future and pull away from past contracts that did not address this issue This statement would also assist in securing the teachers ability to maintain their salariesTeachers of today in general maintain a very modest pay cycle that clearly does not stay consistent with the cost of living While the Catholic school teachers may receive yearly increases very rarely does the percent rise above the rate of inflation For example the teachers willing to take a modest 784 increase over 3 years still do not match their cost of living increases In this negotiation teachers not solely focused on the economic issues but more on changing work conditions to reflect the evolving educational needs One of these issues would include
