The amount of vitamins required for everyday life is exceptionally small and a varied diet generally provides enough of each vitamin and mineral However some people dont eat a varied diet or their lifestyle or medical condition prevents their body from using the nutrients they do eat In other cases extra physical demands such as during pregnancy mean that even a highly nutritious diet can sometimes fall short Supplements may also be useful for correcting deficiencies in particular vitamins or minerals In addition they refuse the risk of deficiency in people who are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk Research indicates that vitamins derived from foods are superior to those contained in pills although the vitamins in supplements are synthesised to the exact chemical composition of naturally occurring vitamins However the natural vitamins and minerals in food are influenced by the presence of other naturally occurring compounds and chemicals Research has shown that a food component that has a particular effect on the body when present in food may not have the same effect when it is isolated and taken as a supplement Food is a complex source of vitamins minerals and phytochemicals that work together Supplements tend to work in isolation Phytochemicals are an important component of food They are thought to reduce the incidence of cancer and heart diseaseSupplements do not provide the benefits of phytochemicals and other components found in food Therefore taking vitamin supplements is no substitute of a varied diet
