In Arthur Conan Doyles short story The Crooked Man there are hidden and unexpected experiences behind two main characters James Barclay is a Colonel who hides his nature of violence 33 and feels guilty after he betrays Henry Wood Henry is physically crooked looking after suffering torture and years as a slave after James betrayal Although Henry is referred to as the crooked man James past proves how ones personality can be even more crooked than ones appearance Crooked men are those that are dishonest trick others with bad intentions and try to hide their true identity In the end they pay for what they have done James comes up has a good public image however he is involved in the bizarre case and that results in the tragic end of his life He was elevated to a high rank of Colonel for bravery and commanded the most famous Irish regiments in the British Army An educated man James loves his wife Nancy very much and never seems to never reveal the inadequate side of his personality to her Even though James makes a good impression of himself he is exposed after he is accused of betrayal In order to marry the woman who does not actually love him James needed to get rid of his rival For this reason he uses the most abominable way to achieve his purpose he betrays Henry Wood the man who truly falls in love with Nancy James gave Henry instruction to the safest route through battle but in truth James knew he was sending Henry into an ambush that would result in his disfigurement and inability to win Nancys love Unlike James Henry sticks to the straight and narrow He is hideous by appearance but undoubtedly he is also the intrepid man who volunteers to appeal for aid from General Neill when The Royal Munster is surrounded by ten-thousand rebels
