Since the introduction of campaign financing in the mid 1800s financing for elections is a critical aspect towards getting elected into office In the past ten years the average cost of a congressional race has averaged nearly two and a half billion dollars with a presidential race averaging about two and a quarter billion dollars3 However the excessive amounts of money being spent leads people to ask Where do these politicians get the money Although corporations are banned from funding campaigns directly Political Action Committees also referred to as PACs 527groups personal funds and public funding all contribute towards the five billion dollars spent These billions are then spent on billboards flyers staff transportation and especially television and print ads with cost only raising yearly Finding loop holes through PACs and 527 groups avid corporations are able to donate upwards of fifty million dollars4 leading to question the fairness and influence in our government too One solution introduced to this problem is restricting campaigns to public financing only This solution was originally introduced in the early 1970s yet with incessant donations public financing has sprung to life in the more recent years Proponents for public financing argue that in our current system wealthy donors are in the hip pocket of politicians allowing corruption in our government Opponents of public financing argue that freedom of speech is hindered After doing my research and reviewing arguments for and against I found that America should not adopt public financing of political campaigns as it is not a viable option financially or constitutionally Being dubbed the first financial election the presidential campaign in 1904 by Republican Theodore Roosevelt forever changed the campaign process Funded primarily by large corporations such as railroads and banks Americans felt that these corporations ran our government and allowed corruption Roosevelt was even quoted saying there were no laws to hamper an
