Yousef SaighMr PajeauCom 101-05420 October 2013Marijuana Should Be Legalized For All UsesBeginning in the 1800s cannabis commonly known as marijuana waslegal in the Unites States as it had many uses in the form of hemp suchas ropes sails and clothes It was not until after the MexicanRevolution in 1910 where a wave of Mexican immigrants introduced theAmerican public to the recreational use of marijuana Prohibitions ofmarijuana began in many states starting in 1906 and continuing later andby the mid-1930s marijuana was regulated in every state by lawsinstituted through the Uniform State Narcotic Act Finally in 1937 theMarihuana Tax Act made possession or transfer of marijuana illegalthroughout the United States under federal law excluding medical andindustrial uses in which an expensive excise tax was requiredThe Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 led to further legislature prohibitingthe use of marijuana and punishing those who broke this law Since theControlled Substances Act of 1970 it is illegal under federal law topossess use buy sell or cultivate marijuana as it classifiesmarijuana as a Schedule I drug claiming it has a high potential forabuse and has no acceptable medical use Not until the 1970s did decriminalization attempts of marijuana begin tooccur In 1972 President Richard Nixon authorized the NationalCommission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse to produce an in-depth report oncannabis The report Marihuana A Signal of Misunderstanding foundthat the constitutionality of cannabis prohibition was suspect andstated regardless of whether the courts would overturn prohibition ofcannabis possession the executive and legislative branches have a dutyto obey the Constitution In 1973 Oregon became the first state todecriminalize cannabis possession By 1978 Alaska California ColoradoMississippi New York Nebraska North Carolina and Ohio adopted someform of cannabis decriminalization In 1996 California approved theCompassionate Use Act which legalized medical cannabis by establishinglaws that allow regulated cannabis consumption possession cultivationand distribution for medicinal use As these are all great stepstowards legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes all marijuana useshould be legalizedMarijuana comes from the flowering tops and
