Why We Should Negotiate with Terrorists

This persuasive essay argues that governments should negotiate with terrorists. The student argues that doing so will speed up the peace process by recognizing legitimate grievance and strengthening peaceful factions within the groups. The student also rejects the idea that an orientation toward diplomacy and peace makes a state look "weak" at the risk of encouraging terrorist violence.

"This is an efficiently argued piece with excellent pacing and flow, and an overall dynamic writing style with good mechanics. Your use of sources is solid; just make sure to follow MLA guidelines in punctuating after the parenthetical citation: "...structure (Toros 419). Governments can..."

If your assignment guidelines allow more paragraphs, I suggest breaking up the second body paragraph into two: one covering the overview counter-argument/response regarding violence, and then a new, third body paragraph exploring the Al-Qaeda example regarding reconciliation. If you are limited to four paragraphs, I'd argue that grouping your first and third point (recognizing legitimate grievance and encouraging reconciliation-oriented factions) has more coherence within a single paragraph than the current organization."
