Writing an essay can be as complicated as entering a discussion already in progress with so many writing styles and techniques you may not know the full extent of the argument at hand While you feel you have a strong ground to stand on some may have a contradiction to and possibly see the point you are trying to portray as incorrect or poorly supported Stuart Greene supports this theory with Kenneth Burkes description of a heated argument in his Burkean Parlor metaphor Burkes passage entails the idea that writing is a never-ending process with new ideas and regulations at every turn He statesthe discussion is interminable The hour grows and you must depart with the discussion still vigorously in progress Therefore any points you vocalize may have already been brought to attention and in turn may be ignored and set aside for future arguments There may also be hundreds of articles written before you but your paper contains a specific argument not yet stated Just as well the next paper written on the subject may bring to light an opposition to your argument Burke also uses this passage to compare writing to rowing a boat You listen for a while until you decide that you have caught tenor of the argument then you put in your oar The conversation is always moving forward facing constant resistance As each person puts in their oar they cause multiple ripples and unsteady waters with each turn being one part of a much larger discussion eventually losing control and direction Not only does Burkes metaphor describe the difficultly in staying objective and non-biased when it is almost impossible to backtrack and ascertain all of the evidence for and opposing any subject that has been previously discussed While being able to back up your argument with factual support you must keep an open mind and take every position into consideration before inputting an opinion You must
