If one focuses on the future they will not be able to realize the true value of what is in front of them People should not let selfish reasons keep them from living their life One of the many reasons why the horizon and the pear tree symbolize unrealistic expectations lead to heartache and hardships is because Janie is always looking toward the future with high expectations She will learn to realize that expectations will lead to disappointment and she will never be happy Her idea of marriage and future hopes and dreams are unrealistic in her circumstances The pear tree represents Janies life and her opinion on marriage Her expectations on how a marriage should be are unrealistic because she is focused on all the good that will come with it but never recognizes that it is not easy all the time For instance the narrator comments The vision of Logan Killicks was desecrating the pear tree but Janie didnt know how to tell Nanny that Hurston 14 Janie is focused on the faults that Logan presented but she never thought of how good she had it Logan had a house and money waiting for her to have a good life but Janie only saw his old age and how unattractive he was Clearly Janies expectations of marriage out ruled the good Logan could have brought to her life In Their Eyes Were Watching God the horizon symbolizes future hopes and dreams Janie has high standards on what she wants her future to be and will come to realize that she is setting herself up for disappointment For example the narrator says For no matter how far a person can go the horizon is still way beyond you Hurston 89 Janie is expecting so much out of her future and she doesnt realize that she may not be able to get all that she is searching for She wants to find love and live
